Stade de Gerland History

Stade de Gerland has a rich history dating back to its opening in 1926. The stadium was built to replace the original Stade de Gerland, which was a smaller stadium located on the same site. The new stadium was designed by architect Tony Garnier and had a capacity of 35,000 spectators. It was inaugurated on April 26, 1926, with a match between Olympique Lyonnais and the Czech team Sparta Prague. Olympique Lyonnais won the match 5-3.

Over the years, Stade de Gerland underwent several renovations and expansions. In 1984, the stadium hosted several matches of the UEFA Euro Championships, including the semi-final match between France and Portugal. In 1998, Stade de Gerland was chosen as one of the venues for the FIFA World Cup. It hosted several matches of the tournament, including a quarter-final match between the Netherlands and Argentina.

In 2016, Olympique Lyonnais moved to the newly-built Parc Olympique Lyonnais, and Stade de Gerland was partially demolished. The redevelopment of the site is currently underway, and it is expected to be completed in the coming years.
